Ise Jingu Shrine & Mikimoto Pearl Island
Ise Jingu shrine, dating from the 7th century, stands as Japan's most sacred shrine.The architecture is typical among the ancient Japanese variety-simple design, non-curving lines and unpainted wood. Then, visit the celebrated Mikimoto Pearl Island to observe a demonstration of pearl cultivation and making of exquisite pearl jewelry, plus women pearl divers at work. (Be sure to bring your passport, as pearls may be purchased here tax-free.)
